On Thursday the Nigerian Senate as approved the bill stating the extension of the validity of the results from UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) conducted by JAMB (Joint Admission Matriculation Board) to three years after sitting for it. There are reports about the extension of JAMB result being contained I the new amendment made to the Act establishing the board by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
At plenary in 2016, the bill to approve the adjustment of the act was agreed and the senate was reported to state that the extension was arranged in order to reduce the financial encumbrance of the parents and guardians footing the examination bills of their ward.
The passage of the Bill followed the report of the Committee on TETFund and Tertiary Education. The report states that the committee had the financial burden of the parents in mind while agreeing to the JAMB results validity extension.
June 2016, JAMB amendment bill 2016 was read for the second time by the senate and referred it to the committee on TETFund and Tertiary education for additional considerations.
Among other things, the reasonfor the bill is to alter the JAMB Act to extend the validity period of JAMB/UTME exam results to three academic years from the initial one academic year. This bill was generated November 2015 when a motion was moved on the floor. The senate ordered the board to bring to a halt its policy of re-assigning the examination candidates to tertiary institutions they did not apply for initially during the registration process.
In addition to further developments, the bill aimed at the founding of Nigerian Peace Corps was postponed owing to the fact members did not concur with the terms it contained. Concerns were expressed on the floor over certain insertions to be made in the bill and also further arguments were made to step down some considerations for another day, to allow the committee do a proper job on a bill. The Senate president, BukolaSaraki suspended the passage of the bill thereafter until a further legislative sitting.
